The choice of plastic

- Shreya Sanil

Raised beside the coastal area, I grew alongside people who lead a simple life.I watched my grandparents lead a very simple life, living in complete harmony with the environment. My grandma, deliberately tasking herself to use the same grocery bag time and time, meant it was a duty rather than a choice .However, those practices are taken for granted in developed societies.. I watched as people took advantage of the easy convenience, plastic bags offered them.

From cups and bags, to spoons and forks, plastic slowly became part of an unhealthy lifestyle. Even though I obliged , I was so blinded by my “routine”, I failed to notice the small corner in my pantry, stacked with piles of plastic utensils. Yes, theoretically I was reducing the waste caused from plastic; But no, I failed to account for the environment. Later I came to realize what a drastic impact the “little choices” had on the overall well being of the environment.

By becoming accustomed to the choice of plastic, we put the sustainability of the world at risk.Due to the luxurious life humans lead, we are able to make choices for ourselves. We are not obliged to choose one over the other, simply because the possibilities are endless. However, over time we have taken this convenience for granted. Because plastic bags are disposable, we choose them; because we don't need to wash plastic cups, we choose them. All of our choices are solemnly based on the amount of effort it requires. But at what stage are we willing to forfeit our convenience, for the wellbeing of the environment? With each plastic bag disposed of, thousands of harmful toxins are released. Over time the exhaust usage of plastic became the determining factor of wildlife sustainability. 86% of all sea turtles, and 44% of all seabird species have been brutally harmed by plastic pollution. Not only is this an extreme threat to the wellbeing of our society, but it sets a bad precedent for future generations to follow. Kids that see their parents perform bad habits, will blindly follow. We must establish concrete boundaries to limit plastic use in order to preserve the Earth. For the well being of the environment, future generations, and wildlife: make the right choice.
